Maeshowe Chambered Cairn

A key monument of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site, Maeshowe is a large chambered tomb, which has given its name to a style of burial cairn. It is famously aligned with the winter sun, allowing light to penetrate via the entrance passage to the interior wall at sunset during the winter solstice. Centuries after Maeshowe fell from use as a burial place, Vikings broke in and left evidence of their visits in the form of fascinating runic graffiti.
